Da Levee (Short North, Columbus, Ohio)
Where do I even begin with Da Levee? My first visit was back in 2010, when Gallery Hop meant walking between the galleries scattered about the Short North before they all moved out to make way for boutique shops and upscale dining. After finding myself continually itching to go back for more, it became something of a monthly ritual to pop in for a bowl of Crawfish Etouffee and an Abita Purple Haze, it also began to dig the hole in my heart that would soon fill with an appreciation for Cajun & Creole cuisine. So when Da Levee closed in 2018, to say I was devastated was an understatement. Sure, the food was still being made (for a time) and the space was re-imagined into a swanky cocktail bar, but I lost a little part of myself no longer being able to sit in the giant wooden benches to scoop up mouthfuls of rice and roux on a gloomy day.
The little light that has sparkled in the past nearly 2 years of this pandemic has been the Da Levee pop up inside Short Supply in early November. Tickets were announced to enjoy a 4 course meal consisting of classics from Da Levee along with a few other pairings. I jumped at the chance to have a bowl of Etouffee and Magic Bread for old time’s sake. Fortunately because I brought along my girlfriend, we were able to sample the entire menu between the two of us.
